Wirtualna Polska Establishes a Micro-Reserve

3 czerwca 2024

Wirtualna Polska continues its collaboration with the Dziedzictwo Przyrodnicze Foundation. Together, they have created a protected zone, known as a micro-reserve, for the endangered and valuable species of bird, the golden eagle. This is another step in the implementation of WP Holding's Sustainable Development Strategy, under the environmental goal of "biodiversity protection."

The golden eagle, also known as the golden eagle, is one of the most majestic species of raptors. It builds its nests, with a diameter of 2-3 meters, on old trees, mainly firs. It is not easy to spot, as it is endangered. In Poland, there are about 35 pairs of this species. The nest protected by Wirtualna Polska is located in the Przemyskie Foothills, in a natural forest, which is home to most of the golden eagles present in Poland, as well as many other rare species of plants and animals.

Micro-reserves, or protection zones, allow for the protection of endangered species, halt tree felling, and preserve annual nesting sites. Creating these zones is one way to protect endangered species. Each such zone protects not only the tree with the nest but also the surrounding area. In this way, other species of plants and animals find their refuges within each micro-reserve.

More about the golden eagle and the creation of micro-reserves is explained by Piotr Klub from the Dziedzictwo Przyrodnicze Foundation in the video available here.

Dziedzictwo Przyrodnicze Foundation coordinates activities related to the creation of protection zones. Wirtualna Polska financially supported the project. This is another, but not the last, joint project. Previous collaboration involved supporting the activities of forest rangers.

The Wirtualna Polska Holding S.A. Group is implementing activities outlined in the Sustainable Development Strategy for 2022-2025. The document describes three main areas of activity – environment, society, and corporate governance, in which the company will carry out designated tasks. Among the most important goals are media independence, green energy, climate education, diversity, and cybersecurity. The strategy also includes long-term goals, with a scope of implementation until 2030. Since 2023, Wirtualna Polska's data centers have been zero-emission.

Dziedzictwo Przyrodnicze Foundation has been operating as an expert organization since 2008, bringing together naturalists, foresters, sociologists, and lawyers, working to protect Poland's and its borderlands' natural heritage. It carries out activities for the most valuable natural areas, including legal assistance for local naturalists, applying for protection for natural monuments or zones for valuable species, and advocating for the cessation of wood harvesting in their habitats.
